The Art of Handcrafted Baskets: Abel’s Masterpieces at 81
My delivery from South Africa has finally arrived, and I’d completely forgotten what treasures were inside! Among them are new handcrafted baskets from the incredible weavers and crafters there, including the legendary Abel. Now 81 years young, Abel created this stunning handbag-style basket with a clasp, available in two colourways: black and natural, and plain natural. Some even call it the "African Birkin bag", and I can see why!

The Beauty of Handcrafted Baskets
Every one of Abel’s handcrafted baskets is a testament to his mastery. He uses an intricate plaiting technique, starting from the bottom and working his way up to the top. If you look closely, you can see the palm leaf width narrow as he reaches the top, giving the bag a unique strength and flexibility. It’s a labour of love, and the result is nothing short of art.

Inspiration and Heritage
I’ve been fortunate to visit with Abel, and he was my inspiration for learning to weave. Even now, he sits for hours, his fingers as strong as ever, creating pieces that reflect his Zulu heritage. His famous closed basket, with its beautifully hand-woven clasp, is a standout. There’s a waiting list for his work, just like the real Birkin, and I feel honoured to have his creations in my shop in France.

Age Is Just a Number
If you think you’re too old to be making, think again! Abel is over 80 and has been weaving handcrafted baskets his whole life. His dedication and skill are a reminder that true craftsmanship knows no age. Each piece is a celebration of tradition, patience, and artistry.

Come and See for Yourself
I’m delighted to have Abel’s latest creations in the shop. These beautifully designed baskets are more than just functional, they’re a piece of history, a labour of love, and a testament to the enduring power of handcrafted artistry. Do come along and see them for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!
